October 5 – 29, 2016
During the month of October, the Waimea Arts Council is presenting their annual juried art show, open to all WAC members, new and long-standing . The show will run from October 5 – 29 at the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea.
Out of the 44 entries submitted, the juror chose 32 to comprise the exhibit, including paintings in all mediums, drawings, sculptures, and photographs.
The show is held every year in honor of Helen Cassidy, who was instrumental in establishing the Waimea Arts Council over 35 years ago. Helen passed away on April 8, 1985. Her efforts to establish and promote the Waimea Arts Council culminated in the Firehouse Gallery, their most visible program.
Judging this year’s show is Matt Harper. Mr. Harper is the new owner of the Kona Frame Shop and comes to the island with a strong background in both curatorial skills and installation. He holds a BA in Art History from the University of Alabama and interned at both their Ferguson Gallery on campus and briefly at the Art Institute of Chicago (2005-2007). He then was Chief Registrar/Collection Manager for the Bernard A. Zuckerman Museum of Art at Kennesaw State University in Atlanta (2008-16) Durint that time he also was a curatorial staffer in the Dept. of American Art at the High Museum in Atlanta (2009-11) where he oversaw the installation of James McNeill Whistler etchings. He has worked on over 50 exhibitions in his diverse career. He has offered to not only jury the Helen Cassiy Show but will also install the final selection. We are thrilled to have him for this show.
