February 28 – March 18, 2018
In celebration of National Youth Art Month, the Waimea Arts Council announces the 34th Annual Nā `Ōpio Art Show and Competition for artists ages 11-17 in the North and South Kohala and Hamākua Districts.
The show will run from February 28th through March 18th at the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea. A reception and presentation of awards was held Sunday, March 4th from 3:00 to 5:00 PM.
National Youth Art Month, which typically occurs in March, was founded in 1961 by the Crayon and Craft Institute, Inc. and the National Art Education Association. Initially it was called Children’s Art Month but was changed to Youth Art Month in 1969. The purpose was to recognize and promote art and art education. It is a time to celebrate and encourage total education which values the development of divergent and critical thinking and the importance of the arts for a better quality of life for all human beings.
The judges this year were Margo Ray and Scott Yoell.
