The Waimea Arts Council announces a call for young artists in North Hawai`i for its 38th Annual Nā `Ōpio Youth Art Show. This show coincides with National Youth Art Month which falls in March. Young artists in grades 6 through 12 from schools and homeschooled students in the North and South and Hāmākua districts are invited to submit their original works of art for this year’s show.
This popular event has provided an opportunity for young artists’ works to be shown to the public for many years, sometimes leading to their own one-person shows. Some students have gone on to professional art careers having had their start with the Nā `Ōpio. Last year because of Covid 19, the Annual Juried Nā `Ōpio usually held at the Firehouse Gallery was presented Virtually. Due to the overwhelming success of that format which reached a broader audience, it will be in a virtual format again this year.
Youth Art Month was founded in 1961 by the Crayon, Water Color & Craft Institute, Inc., the predecessor of the Art & Creative Materials Institute, Inc. in cooperation with the National Art Education Association, Inc. The purpose was to “emphasize the value of participating in art for all children”.
The deadline to email submissions is Friday, February 25, 2022 at midnight.
