Firehouse Gallery presents Signs of Spring, a new show incorporating the annual Cherry Blossom art show and expanding into whatever spring represents to local artists. Although the 2022 Cherry Blossom Festival has been canceled due to Covid concerns, the cherry trees are still in bloom and the gallery is still open and ready to help you celebrate the arrival of Spring.
Every year, the Waimea Arts Council chooses a cherry blossom themed artwork from one of the member artists to become the image for the official Cherry Blossom Festival Poster. For 2022, the featured original artwork is “Waimea Snow Blossoms” by Dawn Sagar. The original 20×32 oil painting will be on display and available for purchase during the show, as well as signed show posters.
When asked about the inspiration behind her oil painting, Dawn said it was inspired by “a fabulously windy Waimea morning, when the wind was coming off of the mountains in exuberant gusts beneath a fiercely sunny sky. The petals blowing off of the cherry trees reflected the snow above–a dance between earth and air, between winter and spring. I was amazed by the tenacity of the trees, clinging to their blossoms in the chilly morning. For, despite losing petals, the trees were covered in a most joyous range of colors: magentas, roses, crimsons, and the smallest blush of pale orange. This painting utilizes the Golden Ratio for composition. This is a very old composition technique based on the mathematical Fibonacci sequence, which yields an infinitely dividable ratio. In addition to being a useful guide for artists, this ratio is found throughout nature including seashells, trees, and even within our own human bodies.”
Dawn lives in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, and in addition to enjoying daily painting in her studio, she teaches online art classes in a variety of media, utilizing a range of subject matter to help students enjoy their artistic journeys to their best.
